Whole Body is a Weapon

A concept we have in martial arts is to utilize your whole body in a technique to maximize power. For example when we do a kick it’s not just our leg muscles activating, we use our abs to lift, our hips to thrust, and the strength of your leg and glutes to reach your peak height. Not to mention controlling your upper body for balance, and using your eyes to focus on your target. By using your whole body in all your techniques, you’ll be able to have more control, speed, and power.

However, another aspect of using your whole body applies to self defense as well. In the Filipino martial art I study (Defensor Method Kali-Eskrima), there’s a saying that your body has 9 weapons on it at all times: 2 hands, 2 feet, 2 elbows, 2 knees, and your head. Knowing this, there is almost an infinite number of techniques you can use to attack and defend yourself!

I always thought this was a really cool concept; there are so many things that just your body can do, and in a fight for your life you should use any and all weapons you have. You’re stronger than you think, and utilizing your whole body helps unlock a new level of strength and power.
